We have waited a long time. But 30 June 2023 will be the Big Popcorn Day in cinemas. That’s when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will premiere. And now Lucasfilm/Disney have unleashed the first short film trailer.
The fifth film in the series has been delayed several times due to the Corona epidemic, but now its ready. The film has been shot, and we have both a premiere date and a title.
The trailer is quite short, just 1:43, but it looks like we’re getting everything we’ve come to expect from an Indiana Jones movie over the generations, in the form of car chases (and chases by all other means of transport), sinister Nazis – played by Mads Mikkelsen, among others – and adventurous action. In other words, good old-fashioned entertainment of the kind Indiana Jones was a pastiche of back in 1981 when the first film rolled across the cinema screen.
In the lead role, of course, we find Harrison Ford. The now 80-year-old actor has undergone a digital rejuvenation cure to not seem older than Sean Connery was when he played the role of Indiana Jones’ father at 59. From what we’ve seen so far in the trailer, they have succeeded. In fact, it’s hard to tell which flashbacks to Indy’s life are new and which are lifted from the previous films.
We find other old familiars. Not least composer John Williams, once again responsible for the film’s score. The director, however, is not George Lucas, but James Mangold, who was behind The Wolverine and Logan, among others.
