Do you have a habit of misplacing your keys or your wallet? Does your dog have a tendency to run away and not show up for several days? Are you the type who gets nervous about checking in your luggage on the plane because you are afraid of never being reunited with your suitcase again? Then the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is for you.
In short, we are talking about a small piece that can, for example, be attached to the suitcase, the dog’s collar or the key ring. The chip contains a small Bluetooth LE chip that sends a signal that can be recognized by nearby Galaxy devices.
More tricks up your sleeve
Via Samsung’s SmartThings app and the so-called SmartThings Find function, you can use your Galaxy mobile to constantly track the location of a specific SmartTag. And then there is the end of not finding the keys in the morning.
Even when a SmartTag is out of range of the phone, it can still be found using SmartThings Find, as any Galaxy device that has been near the chip sends data to the tracking system. That’s really smart: Global surveillance at its best!
The tracking also works the other way, as a SmartTag can easily find a connected Galaxy mobile with two presses of the chip button.
Last but not least, the Galaxy SmartTag can also be used to launch two pre-programmed automations in the SmartThings app. For example, with a short press on the button of the chip you can choose to activate the alarm system, while a longer press can be set to turn on all the lights in the house.
Setup and operation
In the real world, the smart chip works just as well as Samsung promises. All you have to do is launch the SmartThings app on your mobile, and the chip will be automatically recognized, and the setup will also take place automatically. It does not get any easier than this!
In fact, the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag works in much the same way as the Tile Pro, but without the possibility of history of where the chip has been, and you will not get an alarm if you are about to forget the keys. There are still features that cost money with Tile, while one must assume that similar services will be free to the extent that they are added to the SmartThings app at a later date.
There are also very few similar products, including Tile, which in the same way as SmartTag can be used to remotely control various Smart Home functions.
Conclusion
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is a small strike of genius that you can hardly live without if you are otherwise already well inside Samsung’s ecosystem.
This is also the product’s biggest drawback. SmartTag only works with Galaxy devices and the SmartThings app, so if you are an iPhone user, or even if you have an Android phone from a manufacturer other than Samsung, you will have to look for another solution if you are going to keep track of your keys.
