Nakamichi Dragon 11.4.6 is a soundbar you’ve hardly seen like it. With a total of 21 channels, and not just one, but two subwoofers, and a set of rear speakers, this is perhaps the coolest soundbar yet.
That’s probably why Nakamichi has chosen to call it the Dragon, as they’ve traditionally always named their flagship models. The first Nakamichi Dragon, was an outlandish cassette tape player launched in 1982. In 1986 also came the Dragon CT, which was a unique and very special turntable, and in 1996 they released a wooden-cased CD player called the Dragon CD.
That’s why the Dragon name is used here.
Dolby Atmos
Whether it can live up to its ambitious name remains to be heard, but the specs sound exceedingly impressive. The main unit is a 147cm wide soundbar equipped with a crazy 24 drivers, including Dolby Atmos surround channels. Three of these are Air Motion Transformer tweeters; the remaining are surround channels that disperse sound to the sides, front and top.
There are also Dolby Atmos surround channels in the two rear speakers, each of which also has an AMT tweeter. They are equipped with a so-called Perfect Height Mechanism, which makes it possible to rotate the upward-facing units 180 degrees. As suggested in the picture below.
Isobaric woofers
The two subwoofers that complete the Nakamichi system use two woofers in each cabinet, in a so-called isobaric configuration with the units facing each other. This is intended to provide a more effective low bass than a single speaker unit would be capable of in a similar cabinet.
The total system power is rated at 3000W from a total of 15 digital amplifier modules, which are said to deliver a sound pressure level of 125dB. That should provide more than enough sound for even the most action-packed movies.
The Nakamichi Dragon Soundbar also supports Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and the aforementioned Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. There’s also built-in Bluetooth aptX HD for wireless streaming.
The soundbar – or should we call it the system – won’t be on sale until the second quarter of 2023. In the US, it has a price tag of USD 3499; so we’re expecting a similar amount in euros. If it goes on sale at all in Europe…
Insane I want it price tag a little high but I guess that’s why they make credit cards. Wife says it’s to much power. I say let’s try it and see
Can’t never have to much power
